MAY 17, 2013 UPDATE
It was a busy week for Burgess students! Dirt and mulch were delivered on Monday and the students went to work moving it from the back parking lot to the garden at the front. Garden Jane (garden consultant) also arrived this week - the garden grounds were prepped, seed balls were made, planted and watered and seedlings have been placed! We're looking forward to the results of this week's garden activities! We'll see Garden Jane return to work with the students from June 10th to 14th.
New to the garden this year are the willows. The willows have been planted and woven into structures to provide a climbing surface for plants and ultimately some shade for the kids!
Please enjoy the pictures posted below. These photos highlight the beginning process of our garden this year and we look forward to posting the updates!

As mentioned on April 22, 2013, our school-wide Earth Day Birthday was a great success! Please find some pictures from the day reflected below. Thank you again to everyone!
APRIL 22, 2013 (EARTH DAY!) UPDATE
We had our school-wide Earth Day Birthday today! Through our grant from Livegreen Toronto, we were able to host this kick-off event to both celebrate Earth Day and to mark the start of celebrating William Burgess' 100th Year Anniversary!
The day started with all kids receiving their t-shirts (thank you, Livegreen Toronto and Blackjet Agency!). These t-shirts are for the students to keep and we hope they wear them proudly through the community.

The day continued with the students working through various Earth Day Stations which included:
Station A: WORMS - Find the worms in the bins hiding in their cozy, dirt homes. Observe, discuss and sketch the worm!
Station B: RECYCLE MAZE - Using skills, attentive listening and memory, teams of students worked their way through the hoola hoop maze
Station C: NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY - Capturing those small things that might be missed by big feet. Shoot it from different perspectives. How does it change?
Station D: RECYCLE, COMPOST, GARBAGE - Each student was given the title of Recycle, Compost or Garbage. Students with the name that the leader calls, stands up and runs around the circle. The last student back chooses an item from the middle of the circle and decide which bin it belongs.
Station E: NATURE QUILT - Using a card frame, students choose one small area of our natural environment to draw. The drawings they create will be assembled into a large quilt.
Station F: MUSIC MAKING - Students sing a song about recycling to generate discussion and ideas about ways we can all reduce, reuse and recycle. Students also made their own shakers using recycled materials.
Station G: SNACK - Watermelons, Oranges and Grapes! Students recharged at the snack station and played on the climbers
Station H: STOMP - Students helped create a rhythmic piece using body percussion as well as recyclable materials and found objects.
Station I: CRAFT MOBILE - Students used small recycled items to create a decoration to add to premade mobiles (theme was mini-beasts and insects)
In between this all, we had a midday dedication ceremony. Two tulip trees were planted on the school yard. One of the tulip trees was dedicated to Livegreen Toronto and the other was dedicated to the Evergreen Foundation (two key contributors to our school greening initiative). As well, kids re-enacted "The Lorax" by Dr. Suess and "Let it Grow" was sung by all! We have attached an audio clip from CBC radio to give you a sense of the excitement that surrounded this midday celebration:
